Moscow Gnessin Baroque Academy

Baroque is 300 years old, but it still excites and attracts people with its art and philosophy. How did the Baroque period begin? How does the worldview of a person of the 18th century differ from ours? What are the secrets and signs of paintings and manuscripts of the Baroque era?

In 2023, classes at the “Moscow Gnessin Baroque Academy” will be dedicated to 18th century eclectic German style. The course of daily lectures and group practical classes will help students to understand:

  • The characteristics of German style in music, painting, architecture, and dance
  • What good taste is in music
  • The rules of ornamentation and how it is related to basso continuo
  • To get acquainted with the interesting movement “Storm and Stress” (“Sturm und Drang”), which emerged in Germany in the 70s-80s of the 18th century.

The “Moscow Gnessin Baroque Academy” offers subscription training. Additionally, course participants can take individual lessons and an ensemble course.

Attention! Additional individual lessons* and the ensemble course are only available for Pass No. 1.
*For individual lessons, participants must have a piece by a German composer from the 18th century in their repertoire.

Сost – 25,500 rubles (excluding a registration fee of 5,000 rubles).

Lecture by musicologist and music journalist Sergei Evdokimov (90 minutes).

  • Baroque dances” (5 group sessions)

Dances in 18th-century Germany that were popular at German courts.

Group practical classes course taught by Natalia Kaidanovskaya from the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory.

  • How to perform baroque music on modern instruments“:
    • Sources to consult
    • Sound
    • Phrasing and expression
    • Ornamentation in eclectic German style
    • What is good taste?

Course of 3 group sessions/lectures (90 minutes each) by Professor Rafael Palacios from the Paris National Conservatory of Music and Dance and Doctor of Musicology at the Paris-Sorbonne University (baroque oboe, chamber ensemble, rhetoric).

  • General Bass, Basso Generale, Basso Continuo, Through-bass. How to understand all these terms?

Lecture by Olga Martynova, professor at the Moscow Tchaikovsky State Conservatory.

  • “Storm and Stress! The era of geniuses? Rebels who anticipated Romanticism”

Lecture by Rafael Palacios, Professor at the Paris National Conservatory of Music and Dance, Doctor of Musicology at the Paris-Sorbonne University (baroque oboe, chamber ensemble, rhetoric).

  • Participation in a concert of the “Moscow Gnessin Baroque Academy”.

Cost – 10,500 rubles (excluding a registration fee of 5,000 rubles).

Cost of additional individual lessons/courses for Pass No. 1:

Individual lessons with a teacher (45 minutes – 3,000 rubles, 60 minutes – 4,000 rubles)

Ensemble course with a minimum of 3 lessons – 5,000 rubles.

Teachers:

Rehearsals with the accompanist (Nikolai Martynov, harpsichord) are paid extra:

  • 45-minute rehearsal (the rehearsal may be split upon the recommendation of the teachers and accompanist) – 2,000 rubles.
  • Performance with the accompanist at the concert of “Moscow Gnessin Baroque Academy” – 2,000 rubles.

All participants of the “Gnessin Summer School” have the opportunity to attend lectures of the “Moscow Baroque Academy” without a pass:

The cost of attending without a pass is 3,000 rubles (excluding the entrance fee of 5,000 rubles).

  1. “Baroque Dances” (5 group sessions)
